Alamo Fast Draw Episode 23 Golden State Gunslingers

8 August, 2008 (02:21) | Fast Draw Talk Show

Alamo Fast Draw Episode 23:
LLedsliger: Neva or Kent explain to me which all are doing in Los Banos California with Cowboy Fast Draw?
Neva: We started a Cowboy Fast Draw club a year ago and its called the Golden State Gunslingers. We started it just to shoot and it evolve from just a shooting club into a public service club. We've applied for our nonprofit status with the internal revenue service as a 501 c3 and we are looking to promote fast draw and gun safety and responsible gun ownership. As a result of all that gun rights as well and the great sport of fast draw.
LLedsinger: It sounds like to me, from the discussion I had with ya'll earlier it has come a long way in a short time.
Neva: It has, we started out with a bang and got 32 members right off the bat boom boom boom and then we kind of redefined ourselves because as I said we started out as this club was just about shooting and then we started changing to be more of a service club where we wanted to do things. The people we have now are interested not only in shooting Cowboy Fast Draw but also are interested in serving our community. So some of the original folks were so interested in that part of it and have just gone along and shoot by them selves.
LLedslinger: I ya"ll to explain what you're doing with your youth program.
Neva: I was waiting for Kent to talk because I seem to be doing the most of it so I was waiting for him to jump in but that's OK. A part of what we do is that we're starting a youth program because, what we've learned about fast draw when we met PaPG and the Sundowners a year ago they explained to us that in Cowboy fast draw the average age Nationwide is 60 years old. What we wanted to do is live in it up we were so hooked we want to liven it up and as Greg was saying, it could die out if we don't get some fresh new blood. In addition to ours being a little younger club where trying to reach out to young people to expose them. We do a lot of town alleys and expose the sport to children and adults right now we have a family that has a 12 year old son a 14 year old daughter and a 16 1/2 year old daughter in our club. There is another 12 year old boy competing in our town training and competing in our town. We are trying to each gun safety ownership responsibility and build some really fast shooters, who a
lso have a great understanding of how important the history of firearms are, where they were yesterday andhow they need to be protected in the future.
LLedslinger: I'm going to direct this at Kent because we were talking about this earlier, is the safety aspect?
Kent: Right and you know that's one of the things that so great about Cowboy Fast Draw and their rules safety is first fun is second and it's so true. When we are out there shooting I don't care if it's a practice or a state championship, we try to have a hand judge right behind each shooter. So if you have four targets going you have four hand judges right behind each shooter so that you help control them so they don't get too excited turn around and want to waive at the crowd with their gun. You want to watch them and a super good time but be safe.
Neva: I would like to chime in to add a little something there to what Kent said. We just had our County Fair a five day long fair and we hosted town alley for four of the day's and then had a town alley showdown on the last day and a professional gunfight on the last day as well. Our newspaper publisher came up and brought the queen of the fair or whether she's called and wanted all the gunfighters the professional gunfighters to pose with your. So we put some chaps on her because she was not properly attired and she stood in front of all of us, we posed for with a gun and a holster so we are all posed their and the newspaper publisher said OK Ashley point the gun to ground OK Ashley now pointed at me, and in Unison 14 gunfighters said no! He professes that he was just checking us.
LLedslinger: The safety aspect is something that all the fastdraw groups have really been promoting quite a bit. You just can't take any chances so it's got to be in every shooter, it's got to be one of the major factors.
LLedslinger: Kent there was something else we were talking about earlier and that was the age factor do you want to comment on that?
Kent: Our youngest adult in our club is 25 and the oldest in 72 and we have a wide variety of in between. It's something that, I don't care if you're 13 or 73 you can pick the sport up and be pretty competitive pretty darn quick. You might not be a national champion right off the get go but you can be competitive. It's not all about the speed, accuracy is a lot of it, if you're not hitting a known cure how fast are going it doesn't count and I know that for a fact. I came in last. But it's the camaraderie, the trash talking, the fun. The safety involved, you're teaching everybody about gun safety and handling guns, it's just amazing to see these people that are for gun control you know nobody could have a gun. They can come over there in half an hour to 45 minutes their shooting and having a good time, we've had that happen.
LLedslinger: Thats great, that's great! Anytime you can change somebody's attitude, in my opinion is the wrong attitude whether it be lack of knowledge or understanding what ever you want to call it. I think there are a lot of people out there that just don't understand and if it did they wouldn't be following the road tour to gun control.
