Shoot Out at Gainsville

5 July, 2008 (22:00) | Uncategorized

Well I'm home from my first, what I will call my first real fast draw competition.  During the trip my wife and I got to talk about things we don't seam to have a chance to do at home.  There always seems to be something that comes up.  Kids, grandkids, work, house chores and all the other distractions in life.

Bob Graham and his lady friend Louise went in their car and we went in ours.  Except for Bob's car over heating, which resulted in a car being rented, the trip was uneventful.

After checking in at the hotel, we went down the street to meet some of the people in the North Texas Society of Gunfighters and check the shooting area.  This took place at about 9:30pm and Bob and I both commented on this. For this club must be dedicated shooters to be out on a Friday night preparing for a shoot.  It's  probably  a common thing but I was impressed Never the less.  The folks we met were fun and excited about the next day's shoot.  As were the rest of the shooters the next day.

When you stepped up to the line to shoot it was intense and very competitive, but once you had shot and stepped off the line it was back to having fun and talking about guns and Cowboy Fast Draw.

Since our main goal was to showcase Showdown Fast Draw, I was not planning on shooting in the Cowboy Fast Draw competition. but as the time grew closer to sign up time, I could not let this chance to shoot my first real competition pass  by.  What can I say, It's hard for me to step away from a gunfight.  Especially in front of a great group of gunfighters like the North Texas Society of Gunfighters. I did get my butt handed to me, but I consoled myself with the fact that thumbing is not my best draw.  I have started to work on it but I was not quit ready when this opportunity came up.

The Showdown system seemed to be well received by the shooters that gave it a try.  And I did get a chance to get some revenge on some of those gunfighters that whooped up on me earlier in the day.

My wife even strapped on some leather and my hog leg, stepped up to the firing line and proceeded to hit all three targets.  She did a fine job for her first time out with a single action pistol and not much experience with a gun at all.  It looks like I may have some competition right under my own roof.

On the trip back she stated talking about getting her own gun and holster.  This may just be one of the best weekends I have had in a long time.

If there was any bad side at all to this trip my wife (Sandy) picked out the most expensive gun I own to be her gun of choice.  Bob Graham just built the Ruger  3 screw fanning gun for me not more than a month ago and I may loose it to my wife, but it will be worth it if the old saying is true, Happy Wife Happy Life.

My hope is that she will join me on some of my trips to other fast draw competitions in the future but at the same time I hope she doesn't get good enough to beat me.
